Shirati lives with her single mother in their small one room rental home, deep in a rural village called Bukeka. They sleep on a mattress on the floor. Shirati’s father died in 2016. Shirati’s mother has heart problems which prevents her from doing any heavy labor. A relative was helping to pay for Shirati’s school fees, but since the pandemic and lockdown the relative lost his job, so Shirati has not been able to go back to school for a while. Shirati would be in Primary 3 at Bukeka Primary School if she is able to return. Because the mother does not have a job, she cannot afford to send Shirati to school without support.
