Sylvia lives with her single mother, one sister and one brother in a one room rental home. The whole family sleeps on a thin mat on the floor. The father abandoned the family a long time ago and no one knows where he went. Sylvia’s mother had a major complication during childbirth that required a surgery, from which she never fully recovered. So she is physically unable to do much work to provide for the family. Sylvia was in S1 (first level of secondary school) and was performing very well, before she had to drop out, since she couldn’t pay the school fees. Her favorite subject in school was science. But her family usually struggles to even consistently eat one meal a day. Sylvia tries to work with her mother to find food to eat, and they often have to rely on the mercy of neighbors. The family is Christian. Sylvia and her sister really enjoy participating in singing and dancing during the worship times at church. She also really enjoys reading books.
